West Highland White Terrier

History/Origin
Made overly-popular by its white, furry coat, the West Highland White Terrier is a Cairn Terrier and Scottish Terrier descendant. Both breeds can produce white pups occasionally. It was previously linked to the British breeds Dandie Dinmont Terrier and Bedlington Terrier but the idea is dissolved in mid-1800's because of distinct characteristics that are not present in the West Highland White Terrier.

A number of supposed originators are also credited for the evolution of this dog. Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm, who hails from Western Scotland, is said to have first found out about this breed and introduced it in early 19th century while others say it was the 8th Duke of Argyll. Due to these confusions, the breed went by different names, the last being the white kind of the famous Scottish Terrier class.

Description
Aside from the remarkable layers of thick white coat, the West Highland White Terrier is also famed for its deep-set gaze that appear to have bright to dark brown and mean black colors. It is noted to also possess small and pointed set of ears that make it appear always alert. On the average, It stands at a low 11 inches stature matched with an average weight of 15 - 22 pounds.

It has a distinct tail, that adapts the shape of a carrot that is always held upright. Its other unique features include a deep chest, a couple of muscular limbs, slightly convexed skull, a short jaw adorned with neat bite, plus slightly-webbed paws. Its undercoat is rather soft and dense while its overcoat is considerably rough. Meanwhile, the fur on its face is usually kept long, similar to the cut of the lion's crown.

Temperament
Energetic and aggressive by nature, the West Highland White Terrier used to be a big threat to smaller pets especially rabbits and squirrels, which used to fall as its prey. It sometimes acts like a big dog does with a strong drive for hunting preys. It has a very keen interest on catching the small ones and thus, poses certain dangers when brought outdoors. This dog may not look so intimidating but it insists on guarding its owners, keeping itself in high alert and diligence levels. It is easily trained but will certainly show stubbornness once it sees probable cruelty.
