Staffordshire Bull Terrier
History/Origin
In the 1800s, when animal fights are aplenty, came an intelligent, highly competitive breed of dog, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Of British descent, the Staffordshire breed is pitted against either a bear or a bull, which are main players in animal fights at the time, and provided entertainment to the Royalties as well as Commoners. The reason behind this is mainly to acquire the likeness in fighting skills as well as the competitive abilities of the bear and the bull and eventually produce a dog fit for dog competitions since in those times, a dog competition is equivalent to dog fighting where the members of the canine family are placed in an arena to fight for his dear life wherein the last one standing is proclaimed the winner.
Description
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, as it is bred for fighting, is not meant to become a handsome dog. But with a stuffed, muscular appearance framed in a medium body size topped with a cute, broad face, the breed became less than a fighter and more of a darling. It still carries with it the character of a fighter with the machismo, athletic air, and strength that it personifies, but could also pass as a good household pet with small ears, big dark eyes, an enormous mouth, and a neat bite. Compared to its human equivalent, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier will easily pass as a macho, macho dog complete with well-defined broad shoulders, a well-sprung rib cage, and a regular-sized tail. Its coat, which is usually smooth and rather short, may appear in various colors including black, red, white, blue or brindle mixed with white.
Temperament
Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a naturally-energetic dog. It's a devoted family member who also loves being around with strangers. It is basically an affectionate pet who loves drawing the spotlight to itself. Confident and strong, it is very vigilant when it comes to the safety of the family it serves especially the young ones. When its competitive root is in effect, Staffordshire Bull Terrier can be quite aggressive toward others. When its competitive root is in effect, Staffordshire Bull Terrier can be quite aggressive toward others and as a result of this behavior, it often ends up attacking its targets without warning.
