Siberian Husky
History/Origin
It was believed that the Siberian Husky originated in the Coastal Chukchi communities in East Siberian Peninsula. This dog type was developed by a gold miner named Leonhard Seppala. There was a famous sled dog race in Alaska called All-Alaska Sweepstakes (AAS) and Seppala’s employer asked
him to train dogs for the upcoming 1914 AAS. Although Seppala did not have a good start in his debut year of racing, he soon dominated the competition and became an icon when he led the serum run in 1925, which brought diphtheria serum to Nome by dogsled.
The city of Nome was stricken because of the epidemic and Seppala’s act was commended by the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race because it saved people’s lives. After two years, Seppala’s dogs visited the USA and New England, which paved way to the sled dog racing in these countries.
Description
The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized dog, which weighs 25-55 lbs and stands 20-23.5 inches. It has a very thick coat, which comes in different colors. Generally, this dog type has white legs and paws, tail tip, and facial markings. White and black, white and copper-red, pure white, and white and gray are its usual colors, though some dogs have reddish, biscuit shadings, and brown hair colors. It has a big resemblance with a wolf and some facial markings can be distinguished in its face. Its eyes are often blue, hazel, and brown although the are some who have light blue eyes. Often times, some of the breed are bi-eyed or parti-eyed, which means that its eyes have different colors. It has soft, triangular ears and erect posture and it has a two-layered coat, which help in keeping its body warm in low-tempered places.
Temperament
Famous and a favorite in dog shows, the Siberian Husky is a very gentle, affectionate, and loving to humans. It rarely hurts people, but ironically, despite its wolf-like features, it is a poor watchdog. It is hard to teach or train a Siberian Husky because it is often stubborn and scarcely follows its masters and perform tasks. It is advisable to never leave this dog type in places where it can roam freely because it has the tendency to escape, which may cause trouble to the owner and to other dogs.
