History/Origin
The Schipperke is Belgian in origin and it came to be known in the earlier parts of the 16th century. Before the label Schipperke, which originally means 'little captain', is officially given to this breed in 1888, it is widely renowned as 'Spitske'. It was believed that the change of name was intended to distinguish the breed from German Spitz.

In the 1920s, it became popular in Belgium where it was believed that the label Schipperke is derived from a Flemish term 'Shapocke' or 'Scheperke' which literally means 'little shepherd'. Thus, it is relatively a small dog, but it possesses a big character.

It has long been debated whether Schipperke is considered terrier, sheepdog (miniature) or Spitz. It is also known as a barge dog because there have been reports that the Schipperke is found to be working on barges in Belgium, which until today makes the breed popular for being a boat dog.

Description
The Schipperke is distinguished for its all black coat. However, some of its kind may come in other colors especially in other countries, but they're not considered of show quality.

This specific breed has pointed tiny ears with a tail that is traditionally docked early at birth. It has a double coat of soft undercoat and a harsher outer covering. This dog breed is characterized by its long ruffs.

As a small dog, it normally weighs at the most 18 pounds. It doesn’t need relatively extensive grooming, but it must be kept in mind that this dog sheds a lot of furs so regular brushing is important. In addition, another good thing about Schipperke is that it is resistant to common ailments and typically has a life span of 17 to 18 years.

Temperament
The Schipperke is fearless, yet it is a friendly dog and can very much survive on its own. It is very smart as well, thus this dog belongs to a well-rounded breed.
It possesses capabilities for herding and hunting and possesses high energy level with much curiosity that requires ample attention. Thus, dog training is necessary for the Schipperke. Adoringly, it often misses the fact that it's a small dog and would sometimes act as if it is larger than its peers and often exude authority.
