Schipperke
History/Origin In the 1920s, it became popular in Belgium where it was believed that the label Schipperke is derived from a Flemish term 'Shapocke' or 'Scheperke' which literally means 'little shepherd'. Thus, it is relatively a small dog, but it possesses a big character. It has long been debated whether Schipperke is considered terrier, sheepdog (miniature) or Spitz. It is also known as a barge dog because there have been reports that the Schipperke is found to be working on barges in Belgium, which until today makes the breed popular for being a boat dog. Description This specific breed has pointed tiny ears with a tail that is traditionally docked early at birth. It has a double coat of soft undercoat and a harsher outer covering. This dog breed is characterized by its long ruffs. As a small dog, it normally weighs at the most 18 pounds. It doesn’t need relatively extensive grooming, but it must be kept in mind that this dog sheds a lot of furs so regular brushing is important. In addition, another good thing about Schipperke is that it is resistant to common ailments and typically has a life span of 17 to 18 years. Temperament |
