Pyrenean Mountain Dog
History/Origin
Also known as the Great Pyrenees, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog
is a dog breed that has been traditionally used by farmers and shepherds
to protect their livestock that are grazing in pastures. Considered to
be from an old breed of dogs, this big and majestic animal had been in
the service of the people who live in the Pyrenees Mountains in southern
France. In fact, these dogs were so reliable that they assisted the people
of France for almost a millennium.
After a while, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog served as the official dog in
the French royal court from the middle ages until somewhere along the
middle of the 19th century.
Description
The male Pyrenean Mountain Dog is said to weigh somewhere around 100 to
130 pounds, while the females at 85 to 115 pounds. The fur of these breed
are often white in color with several shades of tan or gray, which are
found predominantly around the ears, face, or the body. Out of four Pyrenean
Mountain Dogs, only one will be seen to have a coat in pure white.
These breed of dogs are also easily identifiable by their hind legs'
double dewclaws. Though there are some that have more than the standard,
these are not to be considered as defects, and these shouldn't be removed.
Temperament
The Pyrenean Mountain Dogs is a great family pet and guard dog because
of its loyal, territorial, and protective characteristics. This breed
tends to be wary and standoffish in the presence of strangers. Because
of their protective nature, they will never leave their masters in the
presence of people they think of as untrustworthy.
Despite their tendency to protect their masters even unto death, most
of these dogs will not easily obey commands. When still young, this dog
should be trained and socialized with family members immediately, because
they will become more difficult to restrain and teach when they are older.
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is more suited to places where they can roam
about, but make sure that they are placed in an area where there is a
sturdy place, because they are very persistent in escaping.
