Standard Poodle
History/Origin
Original poodles were thought to be hunting dogs, and they were
used to retrieve gunned fowl from bodies of water. The poodles were originally
believed to have originated from France because of their popularity in
the French courts; the standard poodle is also thought of to come from
Russia or Germany. However, some experts’ today claim that this
dog breed actually came from Iberia. The poodles are related to the breeds
Irish Water Spaniel and the Portuguese Water Dog, and they have become
a favorite companion of people in history. Today, the poodle has gained
a somewhat celebrity status, as they are frequently seen carried by famous
celebrities and political figures.
Description
Measuring at 38 cm or 15 in at the shoulder, the poodle is among the most
popular and well-loved breeds of dogs that are in existence. A standard
poodle is easily recognizable because of its naturally curly fur that
is often tightly clumped and is set in ringlets. With continued brushing,
the fur of the poodle will remain soft and somewhat straighten, yet it
will still have its curly or wavy look. The common coat colors for the
poodle are black, brown, white, gray, apricot, or blue. For show ring
purposes, coats of other color or those who have partial or phantom shades
are not allowed to participate.
A poodle’s show ‘bracelets’ or fur covering their leg
joints is believed to have been carried over from the days of winter hunts
and are carried over today. This practice of clipping their fur except
for the joints was done in order to make them swim better while protecting
their joints from cold weather.
Temperament
The poodles are known to be very intelligent, active and alert. Fairly
energetic, these dogs are ideal as companions or guard dogs for their
masters. They can easily mix with other breeds and are not as aggressive
as others. However, unless properly trained, poodles are not ideal to
be brought in contact with little children, as they have low tolerance
for playful children. Most poodles have an aristocratic air, and some
may be aloof to others. Just as they are portrayed in movies and shows,
poodles can be very temperamental, especially if they were brought up
that way.
