History/Origin
The Poodle’s origin was controversial: its place of development remained uncertain for quite some time – some 400 years to be exact. Among other countries, Germany, Denmark, and the archaic Piedmont all used to lay claim to its beginnings but the title for its origin has been officially bestowed to France. It is now recognised as a descendant of the Barbet, an almost extinct French water dog, and even the Hungarian Water Hound. Its name traces its roots to the German word “Pudel,” meaning one who plays in water.

The German and the French used the Poodle as a retriever of gunned down waterfowl. The popular groom of its coat, as a matter of fact, was first made by hunters who found the coat too thick for swimming. Hair was untouched on the leg joints however for protection against sharp reeds and extreme cold.

The Poodle holds a special place in the hearts of the French. They capitalised on its innate intelligence and showmanship by making it a circus performer. This exposure increased the breed''s popularity, eventually gaining the moniker “French Poodle.” It is called “Caniche” by the French, which means duck dog, probably because of its affinity to water.

Like pigs and other dogs, the Poodle was also used to look for prized truffles by sniffing them out.The Poodle’s popularity reached royal status as they became noble favorites specifically in the 18th century. It also joined royals as they became part of 15th century portraits and even 1st century bas reliefs. The Miniature Poodle were bred down from the Standard Poodle, which is larger. It is skilled in retrieving, guarding, and executing tricks.

Description
The Poodle is known for its coat which is usually groomed in three ways. The "puppy or pet clip" leaves short hair on the entire body. The "English saddle" and "Continental" both have the the body's rear half shaven leaving the ankles with bracelets on the hips and tails with pom-poms. The corded or curly coat must have solid colors such as silver, gray, apricot, cream, white, brown, silver, blue, black, cafe-au-lait, and brown. Poodles have long, slightly arched necks. Their small feet are webbed and oval adorned with curved toes. Their ears lay close to its head and are flat, long, and wide. Their eyes have an alert expression and are usually in brown or black. The mark of a first-class Poodle however is its silhouette which must have a corresponding length as the height as it withers resembling a square.

Temperament
The Miniature Poodle is known for its superior intellect and high training capability. Because it is cheerful, smart, and sensitive, it is a favorite in circus and family activities.

Many owners observe that it somehow strangely understands human conversation and even feels insulted when left out of the household hustle. The Poodle may exhibit nervousness and sensitivity so checking out its parents and if possible, the grandparents as well before making a purchase is advised. As a puppy, it should be taught to socialise as it may act quite reserved with guests.

Because of their mental power, socialising and training will produce viable results. Although it has the tendency to bark a lot, the poodle makes a good watchdog even for its little size. It is sociable with dogs and even non-canine animals.
