Pomeranian
History/Origin
This dog type used to weigh at least 20 pounds when it reached
England. There, the smaller and lighter breed was developed through the
efforts of English breeders who used the Mendelian theories and some trials
and errors.
Because of selective breeding, the Pomeranian these days is small but
its characteristic of being hard and its thick coat retained, which is
very common for dogs in cold countries. The Pomeranian is quite similar
with the dog breeds the Samoyed, the Spitz group, the Schipperke, and
the Norwegian Elkhound.
It gained its popularity when Queen Victoria, the granddaughter of Queen
Charlotte brought home Marco, a Pomeranian, from her vacation in Italy.
However, Marco and other the dogs of the same breed that the queens owned
were fat and big compared to today's Pomeranian.
Description
The modern Pomeranian is very tiny and fluffy with pointed ears and wedged-shaped
head. It has big, dark eyes, which give its smart looks and expressions.
It is pretty small with its 3-7 pound weight and 7-12 inches height. The
Pomeranian normally has solid-colored coat such as orange, cream or white,
blue, and black or brown. There are some who have multi-colored coat like
tan and black, orange sable, or wolf. This dog type is famous for its
feathered tail that catches everyone's attention every time it passes
by. And because this breed was originally from cold places, it boasts
with elegant top and undercoat. Its foxy and lovely appearance makes it
a favorite dog among the toy dogs.
Temperament
People adore the Pomeranian because of its being lively and energetic.
Very smart and loving, its masters also love the dog breed because of
its being loyal. It usually gets along pretty well with other dogs and
animals as long as the breed is familiar with them. Although cute and
loving, it can be very aggressive and tend to attack bigger canines and
bark loudly. If this dog type is not properly handled and trained, it
can get very demanding and noisy.
Children around the Pomeranian should be assisted because it can become
too aggressive and noisy. This dog breed should be properly groomed and
taken care of because it is prone to skin and heart diseases, dislocated
knee-cap, and slipped stifle.
