Miniature Schnauzer
History/Origin
Miniature Schanauzer, alternatively named as Zwergschnauzer,
came from Germany sometime during the mid 19th century, with the most
ancient records regarding the breed found in the country (which came in
late 1800s). It came about from other smaller crossed breeds like the
Poodle, Affenpinscher, and the Miniature Pinscher. Thus, it also belongs
to the breed of relatively small dogs.
Description
As a small dog, Miniature Schnauzer normally grows approximately 15 inches
high and normally weighs 15 pounds. It has a distinctive appearance and
characteristics. This breed is muscular, compact and square-built and
significantly known to have that square appearance due to its height that
almost always equals its body length.
The Miniature Schanauzer is are long-bearded, with apparent long eye-brows
as well. Its ears are often not cropped, thus it requires careful cleaning
for the purpose of avoiding ear infections. Its tail traditionally docked
early after birth while its ears are standing upright.
One good thing about this breed is that it doesn't shed its wiry coat.
However, because its coat does not shed, it requires regular hair clipping.
This characteristic makes it a favorable house and indoor pet.
For dog lovers and pet owners with asthma, the Miniature Schnauzer is
an excellent choice. However, this dog breed may be prone to several diseases
like diabetes and pancreatitis.
Temperament
The Miniature Schnauzer is a mischievous dog. It is likewise very friendly,
intelligent, loyal, energetic, and have natural instincts to protect its
masters. This dog breed is very nice for children especially those with
other pets as it normally gets along well with other animals.
However, as a ratter, it must not be left alone with smaller pets as
it has the tendency to attack and kill them mistakenly as rats. But, Miniature
Schnauzer is a good guard dog, excellent in watching over houses. It usually
barks at visitors and strangers and needs ample time to adjust and be
acquainted with visitors -- a characteristic that adds up to its being
