History/Origin
The Golden Retriever originated from Scotland, where it was considered as pets of the gentry. It came from the cross-breed of Nous, a yellow-colored dog, and a female Tweed Water Spaniel. The first cross-breed of these two produced four puppies, which soon became the bases of more breeds: the Red Setter, the Bloodhound, the Springer Spaniel, St. John's Water Dog, and the black Retrievers.

People first saw the Golden Retriever in the estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks, who aimed to develop a hunting dog. He somehow achieved his goal, for the Golden Retriever became a guide dog and its ability even expanded. It became a therapy dog as well as a service and guide dog for the disabled, especially blind people.

Before it came to be known as Golden Retriever, this breed was called "Flat Coats - Golden" by The Kennel Club of England during the earlier part of 1900s. In 1920, people started to call this breed as Golden Retriever.

Description
Ranging from light blonde or brown to dark golden color, the Golden Retriever's coat appears dense, hard, silky, wooly, and waterproof. The coat may be a little bit wavy or totally straight, but nevertheless, this breed gracefully stands in 56 to 61 cm in height (for male breeds) or 51 to 56 cm (for females). The Golden Retriever only changes its height after a year and its full weight at the age of two.
This breed has a broad chest and a muscular body, which make the Golden Retriever look a bit sturdy. However, this breed has an angelic look because of its well-proportioned muzzle, its diamond nose, and almond eyes. The tail of this dog is long and is never curled.

Temperament
A family that is looking for the best pet dog must look for Golden Retrievers. Its size can be daunting, but this dog is never harmful. It is always friendly and gentle. This breed loves to play and to be trained. Thus, this breed does very well in competitions and dog shows.
However, don't be too fooled by its handsome facet. When this dog is ignored for more than 5 hours, it can be destructive and restless. The good thing is, this breed can be brought in swimming escapades, since it loves to swim.
