History/Origin
With the cross-breeding of shepherd dogs that came from the localities of von Stephanitz, Wurtemberg, and Thurginia, fervent breeders were able to develop an obedient and sturdy German Shepherd Dog. Starting from an herd dog in farms, this breed has achieved so many things since 1899. During this year, the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde founded the breed and soon, the gangs of German Shepherd Dog-lovers appear all over the world.

But, it was April 1899 when Captain Max von Stephanitz eagerly registered the first of this breed, a Deutsche Schäferhunde or German Shepherd Dog. This dog became popular when its usefulness expanded. From a plain herd dog, the German Shepherd became the first guide dog for blind people. von Stephanitz also suggested to the government that this dog must be trained to do some police and military works. Consequently, the German Shepherd Dog has been chosen to serve different countries by detecting bombs, drugs, and terrorists until today.

Description
Standing as a strong, sturdy, muscular, and well-proportioned animal, the German Shepherd Dog boasts of its robust body and handsome face. Its head is a bit convex, while its eyes and nose remain almond-shaped. It has sharp teeth which can feast on any meat. Its ears are wide and pointed, which are always upright and directed forward.

Though some German Shepherds today come in white, this breed commonly appears in a black coat with a combination of sable or tan. Its body is quite elongated and round because of its well-developed muscles. While its thighs are thick and strong, its feet are round and its soles are hard.

Temperament
Though the German Shepherd Dog is not trained as a fighter, it can do well in maintaining national security. It can sniff as far as 15 ft underground.
If trained well, the German Shepherd Dog can be a good family pet and companion. It is known for its loyalty and intelligence. However, since this dog is often trained as a working dog, it is always alert, fearless, and fervent. As such, its aggressiveness may be too much for children.

In addition, this dog does not do well when left alone for long hours. Although it barks only when necessary, it is still an aggressive and energetic dog, so it is best to have it walk around and receive its share of exercise.
