History/Origin
Retrievers are the most common dogs around the world. They can be found in farms, houses, apartments, business establishments, and even in high security level areas. The retrievers are known for their intelligence, agility, and determination.

The Flat Coated Retrievers are one of the many types of this line of breed. The Flat Coated Retrievers became a popular breed in the middle of the 19th century in England. As a favored dog for most gamekeepers, its ancestry was deemed to come from the imported dog breeds in Newfoundland and North America. During the final days of the second World War, only few Flat Coated Retrievers survived the tragedy. Fortunately in 1960, breeding of the Flat Coated Retrievers was revived bringing the fame of the said breed.

Description
The Flat Coated Retrievers are a type of Retriever that usually come in dark shades of black or liver. It is defined as a flat coated retriever because of its long flat fur, which is smoother and softer compared to other long-haired dog breeds. It?s flowing fur stretches all the way from its tail down to its legs. This dog's intelligent and watchful eyes are usually hazel or brown. Their moderately long ears lay flat on their heads. This dog breed has long and very well-toned legs, which explains the dog's swiftness and agility. Its body ranges from medium to large. The feet are well-padded and big -- built for running and self-defense as well. This coated retriever is quite big with their 22 to 23 inches height and 60 to 70 pounds weight.

Temperament
As we all know, one of the reasons Retrievers are predominant in the dog-lover society is because of their stable, cheery, and lovable temperament. The Flat Coated Retrievers are usually family dogs because of such characters. They always drown their owners with love and attention even with just a wag of their furry tails.

This dog breed is indeed flexible because it is well suited for both indoors and outdoors because of its being lovable, caring, high-spirited and energetic. The Flat Coated Retriever loves to run freely and fast either by itself, with its owners, or with other dogs. The best trait of the Flat Coated Retriever is its being highly sociable and amiable with other dog breeds and house pets.

Unfortunately, healthy looking as it is , Flat Coated Retrievers are susceptible to the breeds' common disease, which is cancer. Owners should be aware of these if they plan to keep one. Aside from cancer, this breed is also occasionally susceptible to diabetes, epilepsy, and some hereditary diseases such as luxating patella, glaucoma, and hip dysplesia.
