History/Origin
The breed English Setter is believed to be among the oldest gun dog or bird dog breeds. This breed originated over 400 ages ago in England. It is also thought that the breed is a cross between Water Spaniels, Spanish Pointer, and Springer. Early English Setters were kept and owned by rich families. They are used in hunting. They "set" the birds that the hunter will shoot. The contemporary appearance of the English Setter is owed to breeders named Edward Laverack and R. Purcell Llewellin. It was sometime in the 19th century when the popularity of this breed reached Northern America.

Description
The English Setter is a large dog, which usually weighs from 56 to 66 pounds and stands 24 to 27 inches. It comes in different color combinations. The colors maybe black, white and lemon, white and orange, white and liver, or tricolor. The English Setter has flat long-haired coat that needs to be groomed regularly. Its lovely appearance makes it a favorite entry in dog shows.

Temperament
The English Setter is a very athletic type of dog, which makes it very competitive in bird hunting games. But in spite of its being aggressive, it makes as a good pet dog. It is a very lively and energetic dog, and is also known for its being loyal to its owners. It gets along very well, not only with other breeds of dogs but also with humans.

Since the English Setter is very active and dynamic, it is advisable that owners should give activities that will suit the dog's active personality. An example of a good pastime is letting the dog play in a fenced yard. Otherwise, if the dog was left inside the house, it tends to be less energetic and prefers to just lay down. Children would love to have the English Setter as pets as this dog likes to cuddle.

The English Setter is also known to be a highly smart dog. Just like some breeds of dog, it is very trainable. It can do almost all tasks but unfortunately, it can not do herding. Its bird instincts are usually distracting especially when it is outdoors. But the good thing about this breed is, it has a very sensitive nature. If properly trained, it can easily learn to avoid its mistakes or its particular behavior so as not to disappoint its trainer.
