History/Origin
This popular breed was named after the man who first bred it in 1890 -- Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. His job was tax collecting so he wanted to have protection dogs with him whenever he traveled to unsafe areas while carrying money. Since no existing breed satisfied his requirements, he decided to create one. Thus, the Dobermann was born.

The ratios used in mixing and the specific breeds remain unknown. Some theories say that this dog is a mix of German Beauceron, Rottweilers, English Greyhound, Greyhounds, and Pinschers.

Description
The Dobermann has a shiny black coat with touches of brown around the mouth and legs. Sometimes, other colors may appear such as blue, red, and even fawn. This dog's muscular built, marked by a defined broadness of chest, ranges from medium to large. The specially bred Dobermann is smaller than the standard one. The former breed is used in dog shows, while the latter is used in security-related tasks.

The Dobermann is born with a long tail, though it is often removed a few days after its birth. This tail-removing procedure is known as docking. It is done to make the dog look sleek and polished. It also makes the dog less prone to being grabbed and rendered vulnerable during police operations. The ears of this dog can also be cropped to keep them permanently upright .

Temperament
Most people think of vicious attackers whenever the Dobermann is mentioned. This concept is true, however, it is only a part of what this dog's temperament is. But in reality, this dog is gentle with a fierce loyalty towards its masters. It only becomes an unrelenting defender when it is and its owners are threatened.

This dog has an ample intelligence, so if properly trained, it makes an excellent dog for guarding and watching. This dog is commonly used for police operations though it is not as great as the bomb-sniffing dogs of the canine units. It can provide a lot of protection even from human aggression. This dog is not too popular as a pet, though many families are opting to have one for the sake of added security.
