Cocker Spaniel (English)
History/Origin
The Cocker Spaniel has been around for about half a millennium
already. Early breeds had two types: one is water-based breed while the
other is land-based. The difference between the two kinds rely mainly
on their weight. The heavier ones became land-based dogs, who do more
work than their water-based counterpart.
Like any other breeds, the Cocker Spaniel started out as a dog used to help hunters. But unlike the usual hunting, this dog's main function was not to pick up the prey. Instead, its purpose was to attract the prey toward the shooting range.
Description
The Cocker Spaniel is rather a small dog compared to its peers. Nevertheless, its body is compact, making it a powerful animal for its size. Bitches are significantly lighter and smaller than the dogs. With its delicate features and regal posture, this dog's traits can be quite posh especially when its fur is groomed. The fur on its head may be too short to brush, but the fur on its body is long enough to be styled according to its owner's wishes.
This dog comes in a variety of colors. It can either be a black, tan, red, orange brown, cream, or white. Some hunters however, opt to have a white dog so that they can easily be seen by the gunners. Because this dog breed is primarily used for sporting purposes, it has strong legs, enabling it to become a fast runner, which is especially useful in pursuing the game during hunting.
Temperament
