History/Origin
The British Bulldog is a descendant of the Asiatic mastiff, but developed in Great Britain. Initially called as Alaunts, the term Bulldog was coined in the 1500s. Up to the current time, this breed of dog is very popular and it has developed from Mastiff-sized to the short-legged version it is today. With a squashed nose and large nostrils atop its undershot jaw, the British bulldog could bite a bull in the nose and stay there until the bull collapsed from exhaustion. Although animal baiting in England was banned in 1835, the British Bulldog stayed on as many people admired its strength, persistence and stamina. A gentler temperament was developed in the dog. It has in turn been instrumental in the development of other breeds, such as the Bull Terrier, the French Bulldog, the Boston Terrier and the Boxer.

Description
This bulldog from Britain has a wide and compact body that is medium-sized, with wide shoulders and sturdy limbs. It has an overly large head, which is considered the breed's most recognizable feature. It has a short muzzle, with a broad nose and large nostrils. The jaws are big, with its lower jaw protruding considerably. The British Bulldog's short glossy coat varies in the following colors: brindle, red, fallow or fawn, or in any combination of these hues. Its gait is like a waddle with a shuffling motion. With the wide shoulders and broad head, whelping puppies are sometimes difficult, with Cesarean sections not too uncommon. The British Bulldog normally stands from 12 to 16 inches high, with males weighing 53 to 55 pounds and females from 49 to 51 pounds.

Temperament
The British Bulldog is one of the gentlest dog breeds despite its seemingly intimidating appearance. Even if there are few willing animals to risk a fight with a canine known for baiting bulls, the British Bulldog is always ready and brave to face any intruder. However, in some of today's breed, the aggression has been removed from the breed, and it is calm, kind, dignified and resolute. It is remarkable for its guarding abilities, but is very gentle and affectionate towards children. The breed requires much attention and an owner ready to display firm leadership. Young British Bulldogs are very energetic but tend to slow down when they reach maturity. The breed tends to snore loudly, slobber, and drool.
