History/Origin
Though it's more known as a domesticated pet nowadays, the Beagle started out as a hunting dog during the time of King Edward III in England. The dog was encouraged to run after and corner the game to make it an easier target.

Dogs of this breed formed packs, much like the packs formed by foxes when they hunt. The usual prey was hare, though other games like deers were hunted, too. Sometimes, the hunters just brought along one Beagle instead of a pack in hunting.

In modern culture, this breed was made famous by Snoopy, a character from Charles Schulz's beloved comic strip, Peanuts. Snoopy is of a mixed breed, though he is often associated as this type of dog.

Description
Imagine a cute dog making puppy dog eyes. This is more or less what the dog appears to be. In fact, the Beagle glances at people with its round and soft eyes, its pitiful look almost melting the heart of anyone. It droopy ears and short legs also add to the overall drama that only a Beagle can provide.

However, given its historical role, its small size is not to be underestimated. Underneath its smooth, dual-colored coat is a muscular built. It's not a huge dog but it is compact and fit and is gifted with a frame suitable for both indoors and outdoors.

This dog usually comes in white and brown sporadic dark spots, though what others do not commonly know is that this dog is usually born with a white and black coat; the other colors just appear as it becomes older. Aside from the white and brown, other color combinations, like red and white or orange and white, exist for the Beagle breed.

Temperament
Known as a gentle dog, the Beagle is adored for its pleasant disposition and solid loyalty for its master. Because of these qualities, this breed has earned a reputation for being a favorite household pet. Since it is also quite a walker, it's the best dog for someone who enjoys taking long walks outdoors.

Occasionally, this dog can also get combative, but it usually doesn't mean to hurt anyone. Males tend to make noises and run around, but all they intend to do is chase. Females are generally less feisty, but they are known be very territorial when it comes to their puppies.

The Beagle loves to be with its pack, so it is not advisable for it to live in isolation. It is preferable that the dog enjoys the companionship of other dogs so that restlessness and anxiety can be prevented.
